Saturday was pretty awesome. As soon as we found out we were performing at a Mad Men themed birthday party, we were real excited. Hannah and Tim, booked us a while back to perform at their joint 30th in Tonbridge, not far from Tunbridge Wells. They were looking for a party band who could perform loads of songs from the 60s and keep their guests dancing all night. We had some great song requests and we’re really looking forward to performing some 1960s tracks which the couple had chosen from our repertoire!
We travelled down on the Saturday from Hemsby where we were performing the night before. We spent time in the van (The Red Dragon) running through some tracks and rehearsing some backing vocals. At around 3pm we arrived at Goldsmid Hall. It was a fantastic space, lots of light, very colourful. Hannah and Tim were there with some family members getting the Hall ready for the evening. The decorations were brilliant. I loved the pom poms!! And the massive 30 was a great focal point!
We brought in our equipment and set up. We had a great space to work with and the set up looking great with the hall, the decorations and the MASSIVE ’30’!
We had a quick cup of tea before sound checking. We had to account for the acoustics in the hall as when we sound checked the room was empty, but it would be full of dancing people later on when we performed! Sound check went well and we were all looking forward to the gig. Drummer Mike went out to the front and rehearsed ‘Foxy Lady’ whilst Jamie played the drums. Stuart Morrell was pleased to see his face in printed form. Jamie gave us all a lesson in tethering. It was really interesting.
Hannah and Tim put the finish touches to the room. The flowers and the polka dotted table cloths looked fab. We were ready to go!
The night kicked off at 730 when guests started arriving. They looked fantastic in their Mad Men themed attire! We performed 2 sets of 1960s tunes including tracks from The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Who, Jeff Beck, The Foundations, Bruce Chanel…the list is endless! We had a great time and really enjoyed the performing for Hannah and Tim and their friends, we even had a guest tambourinist at one stage, she was brilliant! During our break, Hannah and Tim had organised a limbo, even bass player Stuart Morrell had a go…a man of many talents that one.
A fantastic night was had by all. At midnight, the night came to a close and everyone was feeling very merry. Hostess Hannah looked like she’d had a great time. We packed up our equipment and began our journey home, not before dropping off the host Tim at his house, who had missed his ride with the taxi!
It was a great night…take us back!!
