It’s the 13th of September and we’re on our way to Exeter. We’re performing at The Great Barn and boy, are we are excited. I mean just look at it!
Tim & Sarah got i touch back in May this year to see if we were available to perform on their wedding day. We consulted our show dates and yipeeeee we were available! We said yes and they said yes! THIS WAS HAPPENING.
When we found out more about The Great Barn we got a little bit too excited! WHAT A VENUE. Simply stunning in every way! We began to count down the days until the 13th of September 2014 and finally it was here! We’d had a great time in the run up the wedding liaising with Tim, talking timings, song choices and our plans for the day. It was really great planning with Tim, he and Sarah had such a clear vision of what they wanted for their evening’s entertainment.
The morning is clear and bright. We are happy little soldiers, we had a great performance the night before at Leona & David’s wedding and we are in good spirits. The drive down to Devon is a pleasant one, lots of scenic views, greener than green countryside and rolling hills. We drive through small country villiages, go up hills and down hills and at last! We are here. Here’s a photie of The Zoots, Lead Singer Jamie outside The Great Barn (it is great, so great).
It is beautiful, ever so beautiful. We are met by John. Immediately we warm to him. He’s so helpful, welcoming and friendly. He shows us where to park the van and shows us to the garden where we can sit and have some grub before we perform. The garden is like…like The Secret Garden, decorated in bunting, sunflowers and hearts. I feel like its our little secret. Birds are tweeting, there is croquet and a sense of tranquility. We feel as though we’ve been taken to another world, it is so lovely. The wonderful team from Posh Nosh bring us some food. It is delicious. We eat and we eat. My gosh the food is lovely. Big thank you to the team from Posh Nosh and Sarah & Tim for sorting us out some fodder, really does make all the difference on the night if we’ve got food warming our bellies. The Zoots bass player Stuart got a bit emotional at the deliciousness of the food and the loveliness of The Great Barn and the sheer friendliness of everyone we are meeting.
Below are some photos from the garden, around the great barn, the decorations…well everything, we are trying to capture it all as we really want to remember it all. I just love the sunflowers, so bright and colourful.
We have some time before getting ready to go on. John has very kindly arranged a changing room for us in one of the cottages which is ideal as it is close to the venue, private and has enough space for us to get changed, warm up and store our belongings in. We have been told the evening is running slightly behind schedule. We want to make up as much time as possible so we get all of our equipment out of the van. (we have so much equipment!) and we do as much as we can to prepare for accessing the room. We remove cases and make up mic stands, everything we can do to speed up the process. We wait for the nod to say we can access the room. Before we know it, the sun sets. We meet the resident dog. He’s lovely. Later I find out he’s called Pudding.
At last we are in! And it is gorgeous. We spend some moments standing open mouthed in awe at the Lovely Great Barn before jumping to action and setting up as quick as our hands and legs and arms and feet will allow! John has to let us in and out to the Barn as he cannot leave the doors open otherwise the bats will fly in! Those cheeky bats will fly in even if the door if lest open for just a few moments! We are grateful to John for his patience with us whilst we load in our kit. Each time I enter the barn, I am amazed at how lovely it looks. I love the sunflower theme Sarah & Tim have opted for, so happy and relaxed and fun! It’s going to be a great evening!!
Fortunately we’ve already donned on some of our evening clothes before setting up which has saved us a few precious minutes meaning we can start almost immediately. For their first dance, Tim & Sarah have chosen ‘Take over the world’ by the Courteeners, a great track. It isn’t something we are familiar with so DJ Stuart plays this for them. It is a great song and was really lovely watching them dance together.
Afterwards we launch into our first set. And the crowd goes wild. Really wild. It all happens so quickly. The dance floor is packed. Everyone is smiling. We are having a great time. It’s great to be playing with our dep drummer Si Small, he is so brilliant. It is great to be playing at The Great Barn. It is great to watch everyone have a fab time! I wish I was taking more photos, the night is so brilliant! You can almost taste the atmosphere!
We are having a quick break, Stuart is putting out some awesome tunes in his DJ set. I can hear them. I can hear people laughing and dancing and singing-a-long. The night is going so quickly. It is brilliant. We are having lots of water to drink to rehydrate. It’s really nice to be able to use the cottage to rest our ears, our voices and our bodies before going back on for our second set.
And we’re back on!
The tempo is intense, so is the energy. There is no more space on the dance floor. People are hugging, clapping, jumping and singing-a-long. Sarah & Tim have chosen some fabby songs from our repertoire. We are playing as many of them as we can. Before long someone whispers in my ear, the music has to end now. Our time is up! We are loving it but as someone once said ‘All good things must come to an end‘ and they were so right and it is so true. Out set ends. Our bodies are warm and perspiring. We hug each other and relish the feeling of a great night. We say our farewells to Sarah & Tim who’ve had an awesome time.
